COBOL for Operations Support Personnel


This course introduces and explains the COBOL programming language and the structure of the batch COBOL program to operations and application support staff. The course also examines common z/OS abends, dump debugging and problem solving. Practical exercises based on example situations are integrated at stages throughout the course.

This course is available for one-company, on-site presentations or publicly for a minimum of 2 attendees.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • understand common z/OS abends
  • describe the structure and purpose of COBOL programs
  • understand the relationship between the program files and JCL for problem determination
  • describe how invalid input data in a program can cause an abend
  • write, compile and test simple COBOL batch programs
  • access sequential files from COBOL programs
  • debug common abends in COBOL programs.

A sound knowledge of TSO/ISPF and Job Control Language.
