Parallel Sysplex Operations & Problem Determination

This course examines the operations environment and explains how the consoles should be set up in a sysplex, the new commands and the command facilities for sysplex operations. It also covers the IPL process and how it changes in a sysplex, explaining the correct way to IPL and remove systems in this new environment, as well as covering the various new errors that can occur at IPL time and how to deal with them. In the problem determination area, the course shows how all the major points of failure can be detected, recognised and dealt with, including such areas as loss of systems, signalling paths, coupling facilities, structures, sysplex timers and couple data sets. This course now includes extensive hands-on practical sessions, including real-life recovery scenarios!

Course outline

Objectives

On successful completion of this course, attendees will be able to:

  • adjust working practices to the new Sysplex environment
  • minimise potential Sysplex problems
  • resolve Sysplex problems efficiently.

Who Should Attend

Systems programmers, operations and support staff who need to operate, and recognise and respond to problems occurring in, the parallel sysplex environment.

Prerequisites

Familiarity with z/OS commands and a good understanding of the principles and concepts of parallel sysplex, including XCF commands. This can be gained by attending RSM's course Parallel Sysplex Concepts & Facilities.

Duration

2 days

Course Code

Contents

The Operations Environment
Cloned images, MVS and LPAR names and the use of system symbols; console configurations in a Sysplex; using the SYSCONS; using EMCS consoles; new command facilitites; Command Scope; Command Routing; system groups and command prefixes; CMDSYS and MSCOPE; Command flow; Intro to the Display XCF and SETXCF commands; the System Logger and the OPERLOG and LOGREC environments.

Sysplex Operations
Setting the Sysplex timer; Sysplex parameters and the IPL process in a Sysplex; IPLing to initialize the Sysplex; I PLing into a running Sysplex; removing a system from the Sysplex; shutting down the Sysplex; re-initialising the Sysplex; managing and reconfiguring the Sysplex environment; path reconfiguration; switching couple datasets (why and how); switching CFRM policies; removing and re-instating a coupling facility; displaying CF resources; the WLM and Logger environments; rebuilding and reallocating structures in the CF; System-Managed Duplexing of structures.

IPL Problem Determination
An introduction to the underlying cause of most IPL problems in the syplex and the real options available to deal with them, followed by some actual examples.

Runtime Problem Determination
An overview of the major types of problem and how to avoid them, then how to recognize and deal with each in turn; signalling connectivity failures; System Status Update Missing conditions; using the Sysplex Failure Manager; SFM Policies and options; SFM’s other effects; managing the SFM environment; Sysplex Timer problems and how to deal with them; Couple Dataset problems; CF environment failures; ARM, its policies and defaults; operating within an ARM-enabled environment.
